Is Bigger Always Better
Skateboard sizes can vary in length and width by quite a large amount, although to the average person this can be hard to pick. Even though a board maybe one eighth of an inch wider or longer than your last, it can throw your skateboarding technique for a while until you adjust to the board.
A lot of skaters prefer a wider and longer deck than the shorter size boards that they were riding a couple of years ago, when more technical tricks were being performed. Some of the reasons behind riding a larger board is that it is more solid, there is more surface area to land tricks upon and it has a lot more cruisier feel to it. On the scale of things, some people still prefer or have reverted back to a smaller board as they find them more enjoyable to perform tricks upon. A smaller board is a lot lighter and easier to flip, although more precision is needed to land tricks cleanly. Some people find riding a smaller board can be less tiring due to the weight difference.
Most of this applies to wheel size and truck width as well. A smaller wheel is lighter and lower to the ground, making the board easier to flip. A larger wheel is a lot faster, less vibrational but also a little heavier. A thinner truck has a better turning radius but can be less stable than a wider truck which is also slightly heavier.
There are many variances which can sometimes make it hard to choose, but a bit of variety can help you enjoy the different styles of skateboarding. Anyway whatever you choose, enjoy the ride.
